Kiran Rao says that she started dating Aamir Khan in 2004, three years after the release of Lagaan.

Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta before dating Kiran Rao. Aamir and Reena ended their marriage in 2002, a year after the release of Lagaan. Interestingly, Kiran had worked as an assistant director on Lagaan, leading many to wonder if it was her romantic relationship with Aamir that resulted in his divorce with Reena. However, Kiran eventually revealed that this was not the case.

In a recent interview, Kiran revealed that she spoke to Aamir very little during the shooting of Lagaan. They clarified that they started dating in 2004, which was three years after the release of the Ashutosh Gowariker directorial.

“Many people think that Aamir and I were connected on Lagaan, but that was not the case at all. Aamir and I got together during Swades, he was going to shoot Mangal Pandey at that time. We had shot some commercials for Coke with Ashutosh Gowarikar and that’s where Aamir and I reconnected. After 3-4 years of tax. I was not in touch with him. In fact, I hardly spoke to him on Lagaan. I was actually seeing someone else during Lagaan. When Aamir and I started going out in 2004, everyone thought it started when we were shooting for Lagaan and that was what led to the divorce, which was not true,” Kiran recently told Zoom.

“When you marry someone who is in another relationship, you bring with you some baggage that will affect your relationship. I highly recommend couples counseling. Aamir and I did couple’s counselling. It becomes a neutral ground where you talk about your needs, how you see the other person and that was very beneficial for me. It helped that Aamir and I agreed that we both had to be honest with each other, whatever the case,” he said.

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao tied the knot in 2005. However, they separated in 2001. However, they remained on cordial terms and recently co-produced Missing Ladies.
