Moto G Power 5G (2024) comes with better cameras, brings Moto G SD 4 Gen 1 chipset

Motorola recently unveiled the 2024 editions of its affordable 5G phones – the Moto G Power 5G and Moto G – which are coming to the US and Canada later this month or early next month.

The Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) grows its display to 6.7” (which is 0.2” more than the 2023 model), but it’s still an IPS LCD with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. There are no OLEDs here. Both phones have stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The camera is a pretty big improvement – the 50MP main camera now has optical image stabilization (OIS) and there’s even an 8MP ultra wide (118°) that also works as a macro camera (the 2023 model will have a UW module. There was a shortage). The front-facing camera has a 16MP sensor.

The Moto G Power 5G’s camera is a big upgrade compared to the 2023 model

The phone is powered by the Dimensity 7020 chipset, although that’s barely a coat of paint over the Dimensity 930 used in last year’s G Power. On the plus side, the chip is now paired with 8GB of RAM (with up to 8GB more virtual RAM) and comes with 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

The battery also got a solid upgrade – the 5,000mAh capacity remains the same, but the wired charging rate has doubled to 30W and Motorola has also included 15W wireless charging (a first for the Moto G family).

The Moto G Power 5G will be available on US carriers (T-Mobile, Metro, AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, Straight Talk, Total, Walmart Family Mobile, and Visible) starting March 22. The new G Power will also be available in Canada starting April 12.

If you want an unlocked unit, you’ll be able to purchase one from Motorola.com, Amazon US, and Best Buy US starting March 29 for $300. Obviously, carriers will have their own prices and deals for the phone.

Note that both new models have NFC connectivity, which was missing on their 2023 counterparts. Plus, they launch with Android 14 out of the box. There’s still no proper water resistance, but they maintain the Moto’s water-repellent design. Some units will be backed with vegan leather.

The Moto G (2024) is Motorola’s first phone to use the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 (the 2023 model used the Snapdragon 480+). This should provide a solid performance boost, even though this budget 5G model is still only equipped with 4GB of RAM (plus an additional 4GB of virtual RAM). Storage is 128GB – plus, both phones have microSD slots.

The display is largely the same as last year, a 6.6-inch LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate but only HD+ resolution. The camera also hasn’t seen too many changes, with the main module sporting a 50MP sensor and joined by a dedicated macro camera. There is an 8MP selfie camera on the front.

The battery is also basically unchanged, with a 5,000mAh capacity and 18W wired-only charging (last year’s model was rated at 15W).
