Hotstar released a new web series named ‘Showtime’ in multiple languages. It stars Emraan Hashmi, Mahima Makwana, Mouni Roy and Shriya Saran in important roles. Let’s see how the series is.

Victory Studios has a 40 year legacy in Bollywood. Although Victor Khanna (Naseeruddin Shah) is its founder, his son Raghu Khanna (Emraan Hashmi) manages the studio activities and is the decision maker. Victor Khanna and Raghu Khanna are completely different in their thought process and ideology. The differences between father and son continue to grow and then Raghu Khanna’s new film, Pyaar Dangerous, is released. Raghu’s team offers a bribe to Mahika Nandy (Mahima Makwana), a film critic, to give him a good rating. Mahika denies this and criticizes the film, making her the talk of the town. Amidst all this, Victor Khanna takes a shocking decision. Showtime is all about how that decision changed the lives of Mahika and Raghu Khanna.

Plus points:

Showtime strives to show what happens behind the doors. It touches on various elements of the showbiz industry, such as giving more importance to box office and review manipulations, outsider versus insider topics. Nepotism is a topic which is most discussed after the lockdown and the show revolves around it. There was a time when South films did more business than Hindi films, due to which the discussion started whether South cinema would take over Bollywood. Elements like this grab our attention.

Those interested in knowing what goes on behind the doors in the industry will connect with certain aspects of the series. Emraan Hashmi gives a strong performance as a man who does everything to re-establish his control and power in the industry. Mahima Makwana, Mouni Roy and Rajiv Khandelwal are good in their respective roles.

Negative Points:

The show starts off on an interesting note, and there are several good moments in the first few episodes, but the other two are very poorly written and boring. The possibilities are visible, but the implementation is not satisfactory. A subplot about domestic violence is included unnecessarily. It seems out of place and doesn’t evoke any emotion.

Some things are done hurriedly and with little attention to detail. For a series that attempts to depict real-life events, some of the developments are not convincing. An inexperienced person becoming the CEO of a 40 year old company overnight seems strange and somewhat similar to Nithiin starrer Bheeshma.

Showtime has another season, but the series doesn’t have a proper ending or a tough time waiting for the second installment. Shriya Saran’s role does not matter much in this first season. Cameos by Janhvi Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, Hansal Mehta, Nitish Tiwari and a few others don’t add much significance to the proceedings.

technical aspects:

Anand Bhaskar’s music is not good. Vivek Shah’s visuals are rich, and the show has good production values. The editing by Manan Ashwin Mehta is great, and the best part is that the episodes are not very long.

The direction of Mihir Desai and Archit Kumar is not satisfactory. Despite a good start, the show loses its grip in the last few episodes. It doesn’t generate enough interest to wait for the remaining episodes.

Overall, Showtime shines a light on the darker side of Hindi cinema, but some important aspects don’t feel convincing. While the first two episodes are engaging, the remaining two are not. Emraan Hashmi has acted brilliantly and the other actors are good in their roles. The choice to have two seasons doesn’t make sense, and the cliffhanger is weak. Showtime joins the list of shows that don’t reach their full potential despite having an interesting premise. Rating: 2.5/5
