Cholera: know the causes, symptoms, treatment

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consumption of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae.

Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea after between 12 hours and 5 days of ingesting contaminated food or water.

Most people infected with cholera do not develop many symptoms, but pass the bacteria in their faeces potentially infecting other people if hygiene precautions are not followed, said Dr Trupti Gilada, Infectious Disease specialist,Masina Hospital.

Among people who develop symptoms, the majority have mild or moderate symptoms, while a minority develop acute watery diarrhoea with severe dehydration. This can lead to death if left untreated.

The most important treatment for cholera diarrhea is very prompt and adequate hydration with oral rehydration solution (ORS). Antibiotics have very minimal role.

To prevent cholera or other diarrheal diseases, it is advised to consume boiled water especially during monsoon, avoid uncooked or uncovered food when eating outside. It is also imperative to follow very strict hand hygiene after visiting the toilet and before cooking and eating.
