Shobhita Dhulipala plays a call girl in Monkey Man
In Monkey Man, Shobhita plays Sita, a call girl who serves as a means of pleasure for powerful but despicable men. Talking about what it has been like to make a career out of playing marginalized characters like Monkey Man, Sobhita said, “They are really beautifully complex human beings. To be considered someone who can be trusted with characters like this is really an honor… If something inspires me or there is some value that I can bring to the story, I Want to join.’
Sharing details about her journey, Shobhita revealed that before her debut in India with Anurag Kashyap’s Raman Raghav 2.0 in 2016, she had auditioned for the role of Sita in Monkey Man. Despite the long wait, director Dev finally contacted her in 2019, and said that he believed she was ideal for the role after her initial audition years earlier.

When asked if working with Dev Patel in her directorial debut for her Hollywood debut was a risky move, Shobhita said, “It’s a different kind of relationship altogether. There’s trust, there’s fear, there’s vulnerability, and you move forward as a group, a team. There’s a certain purity and passion there – working with a first-time filmmaker. So I got on board, I jumped on board.”
The action-packed thriller Monkey Man traces a quest for vengeance after her mother is murdered, taking inspiration from the Hanuman legend. Produced by Jordan Peele, it marks the directorial debut of Dev Patel.
While Monkey Man released in global theaters on April 5, its release in India has been delayed. Initially scheduled for April 19, the film is awaiting clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
